The current list of Sphaeriidae contains about 40 species in Europe, but knowledge about their biology, ecology and distribution is deficient. Recently scientists are focusing on the need to reassess the status of Sphaeriidae species according to IUCN criteria, as freshwater molluscs decline due to pollution, habitat degradation, invasive species and climate change.
Conservation status of Sphaeriidae species in Lithuania is unknown: identification of species is difficult so data on their diversity and distribution are lacking. This reflects both the general gaps of knowledge and research needs in Europe, therefore this study aims to conduct a biosystematics analysis of Sphaeriidae species in Lithuania and clarify these gaps. For that purpose, it is planned to review the collected material in zoological museums, to carry out research in all habitat types where Sphaeriidae may be found, perform a phylogenetic analysis of the collected material and a thorough taxonomic assessment, combining classical morphological-anatomical, ecological species criteria and molecular methods.
Preliminary studies of Sphaeriidae have already started (some species collections are in the VU Museum of Zoology), but comprehensive research will help to better understand the real situation that species face. These results may have an impact on environmental solutions and biodiversity conservation throughout Europe.
