On February 6, at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the Lithuanian Science Awards Commission announced the 2024 laureates. Half of the awards were granted to researchers from Vilnius University (VU).
In the category of fundamental and applied research in the field of natural sciences, the award was granted to Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (GMC) researchers Dr. Justas Dapkūnas, Dr. Darius Kazlauskas, Dr. Klimentas Olechnovičius, and Dr. Česlovas Venclovas for their research cycle "Development and Application of Structural Bioinformatics Methods for Proteins (2010–2023)."
In the field of medical and health sciences, the laureates are GMC researchers Prof. Rūta Navakauskienė and Dr. Veronika Viktorija Borutinskaitė, recognized for their research cycle "Epigenetic and Genetic Biomarkers for Disease Diagnostics and Personalized Therapy: Mechanism Studies, Method Development, and Applications (2009–2023)."
In the field of technological sciences, the award was given for the experimental development research cycle "High-Power Multi-Optical Cycle Pulse Sources for Extreme Light Technologies (2009–2023)," presented by Vilnius University Faculty of Physics researchers Dr. Rimantas Budriūnas and Dr. Arūnas Varanavičius.
The Lithuanian Science Awards are granted annually to researchers for fundamental and applied scientific research and experimental development work of national significance, conducted under Lithuanian research and higher education institutions. The award amounts to 780 basic social benefit units and is granted through a competitive selection process by the Lithuanian Science Awards Commission.
