On January 6, employees of the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (LSC), following a long-standing tradition of volunteerism, visited the branches of the Anykščiai District Social Care Home: Svėdasai Nursing Home, Burbiškis Group Living Home, and Troškūnai Nursing Home. This festive visit became an opportunity not only to share carefully collected and packed gifts and holiday wishes but also to provide emotional support to the residents of the care homes, bringing warmth and care into their everyday lives.

The VU LSC employees have been participating in this beautiful initiative for many years, coordinated since 2016 by Jelena Jachno, a biologist and researcher at the Biothermodynamics and Drug Research Department at VU LSC. The initiative’s goal is not only to provide material support to the residents of the care homes but also to offer attention, which is especially valuable to those seeking interaction. “Most of us don’t realize how important a simple word, a warm touch, or a smile can be. "This is a true gift for the seniors living in these institutions,” says Jelena. She observes that the care home residents and employees are genuinely interested in new developments. They follow news from Lithuania and worldwide, allowing them to find common ground with many. The visit by the scientists became an excellent opportunity for a discussion.

This year, with funds collected by the LSC community, various essential items were purchased: an LG TV, a laptop, headphones, a blood sugar testing device, an essential oil diffuser, a Philips shaver, and many other practical gifts. In addition, board games, soap-making kits, picture frames for works of art, and warm clothes were brought to the residents. Everyone, both employees and residents, also received a sweet gift.

The residents and employees of the visited Anykščiai Social Care Homes sincerely thanked LSC for the warmth, support, and love they felt during these visits. The care home staff emphasized that such initiatives are significant, as each visit brings great joy and brightens the daily routine.

This beautiful tradition has become an inseparable part of the VU LSC’s festive period, reflecting the center’s community social responsibility and care for those around them.
