Last week, Tautvydas Kojis, a graduate of the Master’s program at the Life Sciences Center of Vilnius University (VU LSC), became the laureate of the "Best Master's Thesis 2024" competition. His thesis, titled "Development of in vitro test model for new compound analysis using murine carbonic anhydrases," prepared under the supervision of Dr. Lina Baranauskienė, was selected as the best in the field of technological sciences.

Tautvydas Kojis completed his Master's degree in Molecular Biotechnology at LSC and is currently studying a PhD in Biochemistry at the LSC Biotechnology Institute. In his Master's thesis, he investigates recombinant murine carbonic anhydrase proteins to assess their properties and similarity to human proteins. Although drugs are developed for humans, preclinical studies typically involve animals, especially mice. Therefore, it is important to understand how well the effectiveness of a compound measured in mice corresponds to the human response. In order to minimise the use of animals, it is necessary to maximise the use of in vitro methods that allow the selection of only promising compounds. Tautvydas’ research not only contributes to scientific knowledge but may also help reduce the number of laboratory animals used in drug development.

The "Best Master's Thesis" competition, organized by the Lithuanian Young Scientists Union (LJSU) in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been held for the sixteenth consecutive year. This year, 56 theses were submitted and evaluated in seven different fields: technology, natural sciences, medicine and health, agriculture, humanities, arts, and social sciences. The project aims to encourage graduate students to prepare high-level scientific works relevant to society and industry and motivate them to continue their academic path in doctoral studies, contributing to the advancement of science in Lithuania.
