Two women researchers from Vilnius University (VU) Life Sciences Center (LSC) have been elected members of the Advisory Board of the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL) for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Dr. Inga Matijošytė, Senior Researcher, was elected Chair of the Commission, and Dr. Urtė Neniškytė became a member.
The Commission contributes to the representation of Lithuania's interests in the Working Party on Biotechnologies, Nanotechnologies and Convergent Technologies, the OECD World Science Forum, the OECD World Biotechnology Forum, examines draft documents prepared by the OECD, submits proposals for their improvement to the President of the Council, helps to formulate Lithuania's proposal for the position to be taken in the OECD Working Party on Biotechnologies, Nanotechnologies and Convergent Technologies and in other OECD working bodies, and carries out different functions.
Currently, Lithuania is considered one of the world's major players in biotechnology research intensity and development, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The Convention on Economic Cooperation and Development was established on December 14, 1960. The Paris-based OECD currently has 36 member countries. The OECD also cooperates with more than 70 countries that are not OECD members. Lithuania became a member in 2018.
The OECD's main objectives are to strengthen economic growth, promote employment, improve living standards, maintain financial stability, contribute to the development of other economies, and contribute to the development of world trade.
