The Presidium of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LAS) has awarded 15 scholarships to the best young researchers in the fields of humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, biomedicine, technological and agricultural sciences. Dr. Jūratė Skerniškytė from the VU Life Sciences Center (VU LSC) was one of the fifteen honored laureates.
The scholarship was granted to Dr. Skerniškytė, the researcher at the Institute of Biosciences, in the field of biomedical sciences for her research on the topic "Studies on the Immunogenicity of External Structures Produced by Opportunistic Bacteria and Their Application in the Development of New Strategies for the Treatment of Hospital-Acquired Infections".
The LAS Young Scientist Scholarships have also been awarded to three other VU researchers.
In the field of humanities and social sciences, the scholarship was granted to Dr. Simas Čelutka from the VU Institute of International Relations and Political Science (the topic of the research is "Philosophical Concept of Sacrifice in the Face of the Threat of War"), and in the field of physical sciences, to the researcher of the VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences Dr. Julija Grigorjevaitė (reserach topic "Evaluating Chemistry Didactics, Developing and Testing New Approaches"). In the field of technological sciences, the scholarship was granted to Dr. Linas Stripinas, researcher at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Vilnius University (research topic "Development of Machine Learning-Based Global Optimisation Hyperalgorithms for Automatic Algorithm Generation, Tuning and Hybridisation").
This year, 68 applications were submitted to the LAS Young Scientists Scholarship competition: 23 in the humanities and social sciences, 45 in the physical sciences, biomedical sciences, technological and agricultural sciences.
Since 2010, the LAS has been organising the Competition for the Young Scientist Scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to researchers up to 35 years of age, who have obtained their PhD no earlier than five years before the deadline for applications, to support their current research. Candidates for the scholarship must be working in Lithuanian research and study institutions and must have published research articles with a scientific affiliation.
The LAS Presidium, based on the recommendations of the expert commissions of the scientific divisions of the LAS for the award of the Young Scientist Scholarships, awards scholarships to the best young researchers in the fields of humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, biomedicine, technological and agricultural sciences.
