In the finals of the iGEM competition held in Paris on the 2–5 of November, the Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM team, participating for the ninth year, was ranked second and was awarded the gold medal.
Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM team was nominated for:
- TOP 5 nomination for the best biomanufacturing project;
- the best collection of biological parts;
- the best educational activities;
- inclusivity award;
- the best presentation of the project;
- the best Wiki page.
Vilnius University students with the Exullose project outdid over 400 teams from more than 60 countries. Exullose is a project aiming to develop a biological system that synthesizes enriched bacterial cellulose-based materials. During the project, three working bacterial cellulose modification systems were successfully developed:
- the first of them is dedicated to the production of a co-polymer of bacterial cellulose with chitin or chitosan, thus expanding the applicability of bacterial cellulose in the field of biomedicine;
- the second system stains the bacterial cellulose at the same time as it is produced by the bacteria;
- the third one produces cellulose and polyhydroxybutyrate polymer, biodegradable material with plastic properties.
