29th International Biology Olympiad took place in Teheran, the capital of Iran on 15-22 of July. Lithuanian team led by Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC) representatives won two silver and two bronze medals.
Paulius Valiukevičius from Lithuanian Health Sciences University Gymnasium and Pavel Loginovič from Kaunas University of Technology Gymnasium were awarded with silver medals. Urtė Beatričė Baublytė and Vakarė Barbora Kučinskaitė from Vilnius Lyceum won bronze medals. Lithuanian team leaders were VU LSC associated professor Andrius Petrašiūnas, VU LSC MSc Irmantas Mogila and PhD Rasa Sabaliauskaitė from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University.
The theoretical part of the Olympiad consisted of one hundred questions of different fields: zoology, botany, evolution, ecology, cell biology and biochemistry. There were also given four practical tasks related to molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, plant systems, behavior and other topics.
This year the International Biology Olympiad attracted 261 participants from 68 countries.
Next year the International Biology Olympiad will be held in Hungary.
