Research AREA: ADVANCING GENE EDITING TOOLS
Research Description
Viruses and prokaryotes are a biotechnological treasure trove of evolution. Billions of years of prokaryote-virus conflict and co-evolution have generated a fascinating and enormous diversity of nucleic acid interacting and modifying enzymes, which can be used to manipulate nucleic acids in virtually any setting. Our research focuses on discovering new and enhancing existing nucleic acid-modifying enzymes such as CRISPR. We utilize a range of microbiological techniques, biochemical approaches, and structural biology to identify, characterize, and develop new tools for biotechnological, diagnostic, and therapeutic applications.
